Whether you are a surf sport competitor or just a happy spectator, the iconic Coolangatta Gold is an incredible sporting event that’s worth checking out! A firm favourite on the Queensland calendar, the event first began began as the central theme for a movie, over 3 decades ago!
The Coolangatta Gold movie was released in 1984, and tells the story of 2 brothers. "Joe Lucas is determined that his son Adam will become a champion iron man. He neglects his younger son, Steve, who is an aspiring band manager and enjoys karate, as well as being his brother's training partner.
The leading iron man event is The Coolangatta Road, an arduous competition for $20,000 prize money. The favorite for this event is champion iron man Grant Kenny. Kenny's father beat Joe Lucas for the iron man title in 1960.
Steve falls in love with a ballet dancer, Kerri, who inspires him to compete with his brother in The Coolangatta Gold."
The producers decided to run the race as an actual event as opposed to filming set up shots. The event was won by Guy Leech who also went on to win the 1985 event which was held in conjunction with the movie premier. Fast forward to 2019 and the event is now a popular annual sporing event.
The Coolangatta Gold is a gruelling endurance race that offers several discipline; the full 41.8km long course or the 21km short course, the events include ski, swim, board and run. Participants can register to race in teams or enter as individuals.
